SHAAM are the foremost and most popular nasheed group in
the UK. They are famous for their intricate harmonies and mastery
of traditional drums and effortlessly blend old and new styles of
nasheeds in English, Arabic and Urdu.
'Mercy
like the Rain' was their first international release under Meem
Music and was the best selling nasheed album of 2002. Their follow-up
to this was 'Spring has Come' - themed upon the Prophet (peace &
blessings of Allah be upon him) and the Islamic month of Rabi al-Awwal
- which also received widespread critical acclaim and helped establish
the growing reputation of this quartet from Birmingham, UK. And
now comes 'SHAAM in Concert' - which captures their live performance
at the Nasheed Extravaganza concert in Birmingham.
Made up of Haroon Bashir, Mahmud Norris, Yasin Alam and Imran Bashir,
they called themselves SHAAM after having studied Arabic
and Islamic sciences in Damascus, Syria (in Arabic, 'Shaam'). It
was here they learnt traditional styles of singing nasheed and playing
the duff - the classic one-sided hand drum. Back in the UK,
they experiemented with and developed different nasheeds written
and sung in English, whilst also adding famous Urdu devotional songs
to the already large repertoire.
It is in their live performances that one truly experiences the
sound of SHAAM, whose performances have captivated and mesmerised
audiences of thousands at venues as diverse as the Millenium Dome,
St. James' Palace and Badshahi Masjid in Lahore, Pakistan.
