New Artist Profile: Kismet

Two brothers, one dream. Its that simple. The dream to impact the world with their deep lyrics and emotion filled voices. Brought together by fate and destined to do what they love, they couldn’t have a better name to express themselves than kismet. A word derived from the Arabic term ‘qisma’. The ‘t’ was added by the Persians (Qismat) and then from Turkish it came to English.

They started out performing as members of ‘Nur’ and as directions changed, fate led them to sing as the duo ‘Kismet’. They have performed at many shows including the Ramadan Project 2005, MAS Annual Conference with Native Deen and Amir Sulaiman in December 2005, and Sounds of Peace with Native Deen and Allah Made Me Funny in April 2006.

No matter what level an artist is at, they look up to others who have come before them and who have influenced them greatly. So for Kismet, which artists influenced them and why?

“We have to mutually agree that some of our biggest influences are Josh Groban, Yusuf Islam, oh and John Lennon. These artist have helped changed society as a whole with their work. Their music carries a strong message and has the ability to transform societies as a whole. They are captivating individuals.”

With a strong lyrical message in their songs and a combination of different musical cultures, Kismet is ambitious in delivering a positive and unifying message across the world. “If this was about living a life of fame and fortune we would have dropped all of this a long time ago. The real fulfillment for us is when we can bring hope and happiness in the life of anyone who hears our music, especially this day of age when a lot of people in the world really need it.”

Fans Respond to Seven 8 Six's Newest Release

Fans around the world have been sending in their responses to the newest album by nasheed sensations Seven 8 Six. The moment the reviews began to pour in, the overwhelming amount of support and love for Seven 8 Six and the sounds resonating from their their newest release, Straight Path, were quite apparent. One 786 fan in particular from Oklahoma, a 22 year old grade school teacher, had this to say...

"As the others have said, the straight path album is simply wonderful. This album is a great piece of American Muslim culture. I think it is safe to say that by now, if you haven't heard of 786 then you are living in a box in closet of a house in the middle of a deserted island (that's actually what I tell my students about Allah---He knows what you are doing even if you are in a box...).

This album, unlike the last production by 786, is diverse in sound and meaning. A much more unique and mature sound, Straight Path definitely has something for everyone. Whether you are a fan of rap, hip-hop/r&b, soul music, pop music, or the traditional nasheed sound, you'll find a track on this album that satisfies your taste in music. Some of the lyrics relate to our experiences as Muslims. In songs like "Dunya" (about the temptations of life as mentioned in the Quran), "Struggle Child" (about the sacrifices parents make to give their children the best, and the gratitude we as children feel), and "Str8 Path" (a reminder of what we should be doing in contrast to what we are doing), the greater Muslim experience is put into truly touching lyrics sung or rapped to a musical sound that is both true to the nature of these songs and the newer vibe exhibited by this group. So whether you are a veteran to the beats of the nasheed sounds emerging these last few years or a newbie in this world of great Islamic music, you will find the sounds in this album uplifting, emotional, and amazingly brilliant. Masha'Allah.

I've already mentioned it to others before, but even the design of the album itself is genius. The cover art is ....well, amazing. When I first recieved my copy of the CD I have to say I took it to my room, played the whole thing, and studied the CD case and jacket (or whatever you call the book thing) from front to back. It took me a few seconds, but I realized the cover art actually said something (I hear it was inspired by other works and thumbs up to the creative guy who decided to go with it...great idea Syz!). I have since been showing it to everyone to see if they saw it too. Well, my friends didn't notice til I pointed it out, but my dad still doesn't believe me ("How can that say 'in the Name of Allah' with those Arabic letters?"---still love him though).

Also, like someone said, the collaborations with other talented Muslim artists are brilliant. You chose artists that could easily mesh with the style of the new vitalized 786 and produce quality music. Such collaborations add contrast and thus diversify the album even more.

The reading of the Quran (who is that by the way?) and quoting the Prophet were also great additions to this album previously not explored by 786. The fact that you did not overdo this type of introduction makes the CD flow better. Had you overused this method of intro, the songs would have been overshadowed and the air of the tracks would have been greatly changed. As it is however, you have pointed the listener in the right track. For example, by beginning "Dunya" with the verse from the Quran allows me as a listener to focus on the message of the track and easily relate.

Sorry to make my response a novella, but I just needed to be true to the record. I want to finally add that the first time I heard the track "Thank You," it truly made my day. (I remember the time you came here and I was singing along... "Palestine will never be..." and then I said "theirs" before ya'll....I was embarassed but laughed it off as my friends laughed---and continue to laugh---at me for it.) I am a fan and love the work 786 does for the sake of Allah. You guys are brilliant and truly amazing individuals, masha'Allah. So you are very welcome for the love your fans share for your message, brilliance, devotion, and talent. And thank you for sharing your work with the Muslims around the world. May Allah reward you guys for your work."

SHAAM delight thousands in Belgium

Nearly 9,000 people turned up from all over mainland Europe to converge on Genk, Belgium last Saturday 9/4/05 to watch IGMG Youth's annual event where the headline act was our very own SHAAM. Excellent artists from France, Sweden, Germany, England and Iran graced the show which was billed as a celebration of Muslim youth in Europe.

With Mahmoud in Dubai, SHAAM performed as a fivesome having drafted in Nasir for backing vocals and Shahid to play the duff. Their 35 minute performance was met with rapturous applause and takbirs throughout as the predominantly Turkish origin crowd displayed their appreciation of nasheeds like ‘Mercy Like The Rain’ and ‘SallAllahu a’la Muhammad’. Alongside such contemporary tracks the group also sang traditional Arabic Mawlid material to mark the fact that the month of Rabi al-Awwal had begun. The group took time to sign autographs and have their photos taken by fans before flying back to the UK.

Yasin from the group described the event as 'both a beautiful and humbling experience,' while Imran commented: 'It's hard to believe that in less than 2 weeks we've performed to audiences in excess of 15,000 in total and at some very prestigious venues in Europe.' The IGMG event surprisingly beat the audience figures at UOIF's Le Bourget in Paris, France where Khaleel performed in front of over 8,000 people - mind you their total attendance for the 4-day event (of which the concerts were only a small part) was estimated to have been close to 130,000!

786 donate $10,000 to Islamic Relief for tsunami appeal

Not only are 786 a great bunch of guys who enjoy singing nasheeds but they are also extremely generous and kind hearted. We've just received word that they are donating $10,000 to Islamic Relief. Those of you who have their album will remember their visionary words in the CD booklet which spoke of donating to charitable causes. Well, here's the official press release:

DETROIT-BASED MUSLIM MUSIC GROUP, 786, DONATES $10,000 TO ISLAMIC RELIEF USA FOR VICTIMS OF THE TSUNAMIS

BURBANK, California (April 8, 2005) - Detroit-based Muslim music group, 786, announced today that it will donate $10,000 to Islamic Relief USA to assist in its tsunami relief efforts in Southeast Asia.

The tragic earthquake and tsunami that hit the region on December 26, 2004 has left over 220,000 people dead, many others homeless, and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes. Islamic Relief USA has been assisting the survivors and displaced populations in the three worst affected countries - Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and India.

The $10,000 donation from 786 comes from its worldwide performance and album earnings since the release of their self-titled album "786" through Meem Music in June 2004. In making the donation, the band – Shahaab Quraishi, Omar Razzacki, Zafar Razzacki, Muhammad Saadullah and Muhammad Saeedullah - will be realizing one of its founding goals. Since its inception in 2002, 786 has been working to raise money to benefit those who are less fortunate and in need of help. According to 786 co-founder and member Omar Razzacki, the band’s efforts will not be stopping here: "We will continue to work to forge alliances with charitable organizations and other institutions helping the needy throughout the world. It's not just charity to us; it's our responsibility."

Working with such groups as 786, Islamic Relief USA has received record donations during the tsunami crisis. Over $12 million in cash and in in-kind donations has been collected by Islamic Relief USA for victims of the tsunamis. Islamic Relief Worldwide is building lasting infrastructure in the tsunami affected areas, including rebuilding homes and setting up education and healthcare infrastructure for the victims. Our reconstruction and development projects are scheduled to operate at least until 2007.

- END -

Well done guys, and may Allah SWT reward your charitable giving.

See Evening of Inspiration 2005 photos and much more...

Wow! Were you there at Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall or St. George's Hall? Did you see 786 in their black kurtas and jeans with Palestinian scarves wrapped around their necks (new fashion trend or what?) singing 'Palestine' and the classic Sabri bros. qawwali 'Tajdare Haram'? How about SHAAM in their pure white thobes? Then there was 786 Act 2 along with wardrobe change: Kurtas replaced by shirt, jacket and tie as they gave thousands a great live version of 'Du'a' complete with circus intro (those who were there know what that was ;)) followed up by the crowd favourite 'Nasheed Medley'. Birmingham even got a rendition of 'Dosti' from their forthcoming album due out in the Autumn.

SHAAM were serene to 786's energetic; each complementing the other well and giving us the traditional genre of nasheeds side-by-side with the contemporary. Both groups displayed their mastery of English, Urdu and Arabic nasheeds. Classics such as 'Mercy Like The Rain' were there along with 'Jashne Aamede Rasool' together with a special acappella version of their hit song 'Our Children, Our Future' - an appropriate reminder that these concerts served also to remind us of the plight of orphans around the world. In all over £250,000 (nearly $500,000) was raised by Islamic Relief.

The Evening of Inspiration concerts were organised by Islamic Relief UK and also featured other great acts including Dawud Wharnsby and the Fletcher Valve Drummers; Mesud Kurtis; Imad Rami; Napoleon; Abid Baig together with comedy from the irrepressible Azhar Usman.

Meem Music signs Wahied Kannemeyer

Meem Music recently announced the signing of Cape Town-based singer/songwriter Wahied Kannemeyer as the newest artist on the label’s roster. His debut CD, Divine Blessings, was released in December 2004 (he also features on the compilation album The Calling.) He becomes the third South African artist on the Meem Music label, the other two being Shaheed Alkawn and Inayet Petker.

A former student of Al-Azhar, Wahied is known throughout Cape Town as a renowned nasheed singer who performs both solo and with the group Iman. In addition to beautifully rendering the Cape style dhikr on Divine Blessings and singing other classic songs, Wahied also writes and performs his own nasheeds and has performed with Malaysian group Raihan during their tour of South Africa.

Mentor/producer Amien Ahmed, ex-Radio 786 and now of Buraq Records, first introduced Wahied’s music to the Meem staff. Struck by the poetic and authentic renditions and his great voice, Meem were happy to offer Wahied a deal that would give his talents exposure outside of his native South Africa and enable him to develop his artistic capabilities.

Meem Music’s MD Tayyeb Shah said, “Wahied Kannemeyer is a good, young singer and songwriter who we believe possesses the qualities to make a fine nasheed artist and adds another dimension to Meem's artists' roster. We are looking forward to Wahied developing his talents under our label and to him working with our other artists to, God willing, become both an outstanding solo singer and important member of the group Iman.”

Wahied said, “I’m honoured and excited to be a part of the Meem family of nasheed artists. They are very passionate about what they do and I hope that will inspire me further. I'm pleased by the international release of my material.”

Celebrate-Eid events a resounding success

SHAAM and 786 were joined by Nasheed super group Raihan as the acts at this year's Celebrate-Eid events in Manchester, Birmingham and London (19-21 November 2004) organised in partnership with Muslim Association of Britain Youth. Comedy was by Omair Ali (USA) and an inspirational talk was delivered by ART International and Iqraa TV host Moez Masoud from Egypt. These sell-out events provided a great mix of entertainment & spiritual reminders for all the family. A great big thanks to all who attended, the artists, the sponsors (HSBC Amanah Finance, Tahira Foods, Islam Channel) and all the MAB volunteers and organisers. Watch out for footage from the London event...coming soon.

Some comments received from those who attended the shows:

"the concert in manchester was wicked, keep it up and 786 rock"

"I just wanted to say a VERY well done to MAB for a great concert. It was really great and the location was excellent. It was warm and comfy, unlike the seats at Aston Villa Leisure Centre [Birmingham]where all the other concerts have been held. The great thing about this concert also was that you had a variety of people. i.e it wasn't only nasheeds but you had a comedian as well as an excellent speaker. So do something like this again!!!! InshaAllah!!!"

"I went to the london celebrate eid show at logan hall and it was FANTASTIC.I really enjoyed myself i thought ALL the artist were BRILLIANT also Omair Ali he cracked me up! i would love to go again so please keep me updated on forthcoming events."
